In February, our world shattered when our 16-year-old daughter, Odel, was diagnosed with aggressive leukemia (AML). Doctors told us her agonizing treatment plan will take at least eight grueling months. For the past four months, my husband and I have been living a waking nightmare by her bed at Schneider Hospital, five hours away from home. We have only been able to go back twice, leaving our younger children behind while we focus entirely on keeping Odel alive. The harsh treatments have severely weakened her immune system, meaning she desperately needs a highly sterile apartment nearby and specially prepared sterile meals just to survive.
We are being crushed under an impossible financial weight. Keeping Odel safe with her specialized diet, paying for our own necessary medications, and simply surviving away from home costs us over 2,000 NIS every single week. I have been forced to take unpaid leave from work for months just to be with her, and because we had to drop everything, our small family business has collapsed. Now, to make a horrific situation even worse, we are facing an immediate threat of foreclosure. If we cannot pay off a massive mounting debt, we will lose our home.
